Lingnan Fellow Prof Grossmann attends IEEE CASE 2026, sharing research on enterprise-wide optimisation and industrial production planning

18 Aug 2026

Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science at Lingnan University, and Prof Ignacio E. Grossmann, Lingnan Fellow at the Lingnan University Institute for Advanced Study (LUIAS), and internationally recognised chemical engineering scholar, attended the 22nd IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (IEEE CASE 2026), which opened today, 18 August, in Shenyang, Liaoning Province. The conference, themed “Smart Industry”, brought together leading automation and robotics scholars and industry experts from around the world. President Qin described Prof Grossmann’s academic background and considerable achievements, and Prof Grossmann delivered a plenary speech, entitled “Challenges in the Application of Mathematical Programming Approaches to Industrial Enterprise-wide Optimisation”, sharing the challenges of mathematical programming approaches to enterprise-wide optimisation, and the application of this research to industrial production planning, supply chains, and enterprise decision-making.

The speech covered integrated planning and scheduling of batch plants, as well as bi-level decomposition methods for addressing complex optimisation problems. Prof Grossmann also explored the motivations for enterprise-wide optimisation, noting that global industries today face intense international competition and increasingly complex logistics, while businesses are under pressure to reduce costs and inventories, and minimise their environmental impact. All of this requires more effective integration of production, logistics, and enterprise decision-making to improve overall operational efficiency.

Prof Grossmann is a scholar of remarkable academic accomplishment. He is an elected member of the US National Academy of Engineering, and a world-renowned scholar in process systems engineering and computational optimisation. He has made significant contributions to optimisation, decision-making, chemical production, and supply chain management, and is currently the Rudolph R. and Florence Dean University Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He received the title of Lingnan Fellow from the Lingnan University Institute for Advanced Study (LUIAS) in 2024, and his research has assisted the development of mathematical programming models and solution methods. The professor has authored more than 800 papers and several influential books, including Systematic Methods of Chemical Process Design and the more recent authoritative textbook Advanced Optimisation for Process Systems Engineering.

The two scholars representing Lingnan University at the international academic conference IEEE CASE 2026 demonstrated the University’s close engagement with the international academic community in data science, artificial intelligence, and interdisciplinary research. This encourages the exchange of the latest research findings between researchers and industry practitioners, and facilitates discussions on developments in industrial optimisation, data science, and related technologies.
