"Gerontechnology Practitioner Training Course" - a certificate course held by Lingnan University (LU) Institute of Policy Studies to promote gerontechnology to meet social needs

21 Feb 2024

"Community engagement and social responsibility" is one of LU's core values. In response to the ageing population and to improve the quality of life for the older adults, the "Jockey Club Gerontechnology and Smart Ageing in Place Project” (GTSA) team under the Institute of Policy Studies is committed to promoting and increasing public awareness of gerontechnology.

The GTSA team regularly promotes gerontechnology through different activities; one of the highlights is the Gerontechnology Practitioner Training Course. The course aims to train participants to understand the needs of the older adults in areas such as Healthcare, Dining, Living, Transport, Learning and Exercise. After completing the course, participants are invited to become gerontechnology ambassadors, contribute to society through volunteer services.

The 30th cohort of the course was held and ended in January. The course was conducted both online and offline. Participants who attended the course on-site at the "LU Jockey Club Gerontech-X Lab" could experience those gerontechnology products and understand their importance for the older adults and caregivers. Online participants could also join the class without geographical barriers, and communicate with others through the internet. In addition, the GTSA team also invited the intern students from the Education University of Hong Kong to join in the 30th cohort, and aimed nurturing the young students skills and knowledge in public services.

The GTSA team welcomes public across different age-groups to join the course so as to promote intergenerational harmony. In the past 30 cohorts, many young people showed interest in gerontechnology; some have become ambassadors and strive to promote Gerontechnology in the community.
