CIO message for 16th issue of Newsletter

This academic term starts with a Carnival at the Sin Cho Ming Function Hall to welcome all our postgraduate students. ITSC mounted an interactive booth with games and souvenirs to impart the practical tips of using ITSC services amidst fun and laughter. The varieties of the ITSC Carnival booth also reflects the diversity of ITSC services.

We proudly launched the first High-Performance Computing (HPC) Center in February 2025 with a grand opening ceremony on 8 July 2025 during the Digital Universities Asia 2025 Conference hosted on campus. Named as “Lingnan HPC NexT” to signify the key mission of this Centre to be the nexus of the future HPC technology, the Centre can power up to 120-kilowatt CPU / GPU servers through the specialised infrastructure and equipment, and incorporates green and sustainable elements, including efficient cooling systems and environmentally friendly fire suppression agent. The total computing processing power is over 6,000 Teraflops and ranks among the top local universities in Hong Kong and Macau. It represents a new era of computational excellence of the University.

To celebrate this grand opening of Lingnan HPC NexT, we collaborated with Nvidia AI Technology Centre (Hong Kong) to organize the first HPC Week from 7 to 11 July 2025. We received high participation from both staff and students on the week-long events featuring a full-day bootcamp, a full-day Deep Learning Institute and a technical workshop. I witnessed that all participants had learnt much from the three Nvidia AI experts.

We also organized the first Cybersecurity Awareness Day with interactive game booths to impart cybersecurity knowledge through fun games. In this issue, you will learn a lot of progress of our development in the past academic year. This includes new applications we developed to enhance the operational efficiency of the University, new campus facilities with advanced IT and AV technology, new security measures to build a more secure network environment, our support for research students and a suite of hardware upgrade to accelerate the performance of IT equipment.  Please enjoy reading it.
