Deployment of campus-wide LoRaWAN IoT infrastructure

LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) is a communication protocol designed for IoT applications, enabling long-range data transmission with low power consumption. It supports secure, bi-directional communication over distances up to 15 kilometers in rural areas and several kilometers in urban settings. Its star-of-stars topology connects battery-operated devices to gateways, which forward data to central network servers. LoRaWAN is ideal for various IoT applications, including environmental monitoring and control, within university settings.

The installation of LoRaWAN gateways, software applications, sample sensors, and a demonstration dashboard was completed in June 2025. To contribute to building a Smart Campus, different LoRaWAN sensors can be deployed and connected to the LoRaWAN infrastructure. The University Library has been deploying various kinds of IoT devices to enhance their operations and reader experience.

Academic and administrative departments and units are welcome to approach ITSC for the deployment of their LoRaWAN devices and to connect to the University’s IoT infrastructure.
