President S. Joe Qin joins anniversary celebrations of Shenzhen University and Central China Normal University
President Prof S. Joe Qin of Lingnan University was invited to attend the anniversary celebrations of Shenzhen University (SZU) and Central China Normal University this September and October. He met with the senior management of both universities and conducted lectures for faculty members and students, fostering the exchanges of higher education and scientific research collaborations between China and Hong Kong.
On 27 September, President Qin joined the 40th anniversary celebration activities of SZU. He exchanged views with President Mao Junfa and Vice President Zhang Xueji of SZU, and introduced the latest developments of Lingnan University and looked forward to strengthening collaborations between the two universities in areas including student exchanges and data science.
President Qin also gave a lecture in the afternoon on “Dialogue with SZU students on internationalisation of higher education”. Based on his more than 30 years of experiences in the higher education sector in the United States, Hong Kong and Mainland China, and combining the concepts of East and West, President Qin shared his experience and perspectives about university education, and took Lingnan University as an example to introduce the features of liberal arts education.
Prof S. Joe Qin, President of Lingnan University, is invited to give a speech at the reception, saying that SZU has nurtured for the society countless number of very accomplished talents, whose achievements have fully reflected the success of SZU in the past 40 years.
Besides, President Qin took part in the events celebrating the 120th anniversary of Central China Normal University (CCNU) from 1 to 2 October. At the “CCNU Forum” held in the morning of 1 October, he gave a presentation for "Dialogue with CCNU students on internationalisation of higher education’’. He shared with more than 100 faculty members and students from the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence in Education the changes in the development of higher education in the United States, and compared it with the evolution of higher education in China. He also elaborated on the features of liberal arts education, saying that the future of Lingnan University’s liberal arts education will be positioned as a ‘’research-oriented liberal arts university in the digital era’’.
Afterwards, he met with Professor Xia Lixin, Secretary of the Party Committee of CCNU, and congratulated CCNU on its admirable contributions to the development of education in China. He pointed out that the history of CCNU and Lingnan University shared a lot of similarities, and hoped that the two universities could strengthen future collaborations in areas of education technology and big data.
In the afternoon of 2 October, President Qin delivered a speech about “Nurturing of talents in the higher education sector’’ in the symposium on “Identifying and nurturing innovative talents” at the ‘’Chinese and Foreign University Presidents Forum’’. He shared Lingnan University’s unique liberal arts education and the approach it used to facilitate whole-person development with the attending presidents from universities in China and overseas.
