World-renowned mathematician Prof Raymond Chan Hon-fu has officially assumed his new position as the Vice-President (Academics) cum Provost, and Lam Man Tsan Chair Professor of Scientific Computing at Lingnan University.

“I am delighted to join Lingnan and hope to work together to cultivate the ‘4Cs’ in students through the integration of AI and liberal arts education: Creativity, Critical thinking, Communication, and Collaboration, equipping them with innovative and entrepreneurial mind to seize the new opportunities of digital transformation.” He believes that data is becoming increasingly important in societal transformation and metaphorically compares data to gold in the old economy.

We need to know how to filter out impurities and distill the ‘gold’ buried in the ‘sand’. Data science is no different; we can find data anytime, anywhere, but the key is to learn how to refine data into useful and valuable resources for society.

Vice-President Chan, who enjoys hiking, finds himself in a tranquil and open environment surrounded by nature on Lingnan campus. This brings him a sense of physical and mental well-being. “Next, I would like to greet colleagues from different faculties and visit student hostels to better understand the lives of Lingnan students and establish close connections with them. Together, we will fulfill our shared mission of transforming Lingnan University into a leading research-intensive liberal arts university in the digital age.”
