Over 800 people join Lingnan University’s Low Carbon Bazaar and Closing Ceremony of Carbon Neutral Action

The Office of Service-Learning at Lingnan University organised the Low Carbon Bazaar and Closing Ceremony of Carbon Neutral Action on 30 August 2024 at The Mills in Tsuen Wan to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the project’s achievements, and to encourage low-carbon living.

Ever since September 2022, the Office of Service-Learning at Lingnan University has been implementing a two-year initiative, the Carbon Neutral Action Project, with the support of the Sustainable Development Fund. This initiative aims to advance sustainable development by arranging a wide range of innovative experiences and educational activities in order to encourage people to reconsider long-held beliefs and behaviours and to integrate a green and low-carbon lifestyle into daily living.

The Office of Service-Learning organised the Low Carbon Bazaar and Closing Ceremony of Carbon Neutral Action on 30 August 2024 at The Mills in Tsuen Wan to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the project’s achievements, and to encourage low-carbon living. The ceremony, hosted by Prof Albert Ko Wing-yin, Director of Service-Learning and the Lingnan Entrepreneurship Initiative, was attended by community partners and guests from various departments of Lingnan University, who reviewed the project highlights and presented awards for the Low Carbon Recipe Competition, and the Green and Low-Carbon: Hostel and Campus Competition – Bug Wars Against Food Waste.

The event has received strong support from the Government, community partners, as well as staff, students, and alumni from various departments of Lingnan, attracting over 800 participants.

Prof Ko explained in his speech that the project exemplifies the University's commitment to knowledge transfer and community engagement. He attributed its successful implementation to government support, close cooperation with community partners, the concerted efforts of different departments at Lingnan University, and the active participation of the general public. Although this event marked the project’s closing ceremony, the professor hopes that everyone present will continue to spread the ideals of low-carbon living.

The event was content-rich and attracted over 800 participants. In addition to the closing ceremony, there was a Low Carbon Bazaar with over 30 green shops, non-profit organisations, government departments, and active participation from various departments, students, and alumni of Lingnan University. The stalls offered a range of products related to environmental protection and low-carbon living, and information on sustainable living. People were encouraged to recognise the importance of sustainable living while shopping, and to adopt new, environmentally friendly, low-carbon habits.

In addition, there were a Mobile Exhibition of Low Carbon Living, and several upcycling workshops where participants could learn to make jewellery from kitchen waste, screen print on used clothes and eco-bags, create sea glass crafts, and grow plants using coffee grounds. Attendees found the activities intriguing and enjoyable, and were surprised that many discarded items still hold value and can be upcycled, thus enabling better use of our precious resources and reducing waste.
