Lingnan University hosts 'Forest Healing Music Concert' to foster an inclusive society
The Forest Healing Music Concert, on 20 and 21 September 2024 at The Fringe Club, marks the first public student concert since the establishment of the Wong Bing Lai Music and Performing Arts Unit at Lingnan University in 2017, and serves as a significant milestone for the Link Sound Sinfonia Project. The concert aims to provide the audience with an experience of physical and mental well-being through the concepts of forest bathing and to promote social inclusion.
In the Link Sound Sinfonia Project, Lingnan students collaborated with participants with special educational needs to create works, which were performed at the concert. For instance, in the segment titled "The Mushrooms World", the song "Golden Mushroom Fried Noodles" was crafted with the help of generative artificial intelligence, incorporating details from everyday life and diet into the musical composition. The final chapter features ''Juan Zhu Lian'', which showcases the fusion of Chinese and Western instruments, summarising the students' exploratory experiences in the class.
The performance journey includes various highlights such as African drumming, choir performances, guitar classes, and the invaluable contribution of youth dancers, who link the different segments through expressive body language. This creates a concert that harmoniously blends music and nature, breaking down the barriers between teachers and students, as well as between abled and disabled individuals. It exemplifies the Unit's commitment to fostering community participation among Lingnanians and emphasising the impact of music on individuals and communities.
