Music across time and space: Lingnan University co-hosts seminar on Chinese music inheritance
The "Ancient and Modern Musical Events Across Time and Space - Modern Inheritance of Chinese Music" seminar, co-hosted by Lingnan’s Wong Bing Lai Music and Performing Arts Unit (WBLMP) and the Joint Publishing (Hong Kong) Company, was held at the Music Laboratory on 1 March.
The seminar was chaired by Prof Ip Kim-ho, Head and Professor of Practice of WBLMP. A group of scholars, musicians, and cultural enthusiasts shared their insights on the cross-cultural transmission of the I Ching, the spread of Chinese music to the West, and the history of musical instrument heritage. They also performed live, using music to connect with friends.
Prof Ip Kim-ho stated that the repertoire for this seminar includes Chinese music pieces combined with traditional poetry, Cantonese pop songs, and ensembles of Chinese and Western instruments. He hopes that through this seminar, students and the public will not only deepen their understanding of Chinese musical instruments and history but also explore various possibilities for the future development of Chinese music, promoting its more diverse growth.
WBLMP was established in 2017 at Lingnan University, with the aims to explore interdisciplinary programmes on music and performing arts, to inspire students from different backgrounds and disciplines, and to experience the benefits of music beyond the aesthetics appreciation of diverse genres and styles.

Dr Virginia Li Meng, Lecturer at the Confucius Institute of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Mr Wong Wai-ming, Xiao player and maker, performs the Cantonese pop song 'A House Is Not A Home(家變)' together.
The seminar deepens students' understanding of Chinese musical instruments, and the students expressed that they benefited greatly.
