Enrol at Lingnan University Summer School 2014 to experience liberal arts education

Lingnan University is inviting applications to 27 courses of its summer school this year, which encompass disciplines of Business Studies, Humanities, Languages, Science, Service-Learning and Social Sciences to cater for the diverse interests of students and members of the community.

Two new courses, namely “Buddhism in the Contemporary World” and “Special Topics in Visual Studies: Book Arts” will be offered this summer. The introductory course to Buddhism, provided by Department of Philosophy, is designed to provide a preliminary understanding of the history, doctrine and core principles of Buddhism – its theory of liberation, cosmology and ethics. Case studies of contemporary Buddhism from different social and geographical contexts will also be analysed, thus enabling students to study the dynamics of adaptation to modernity and post-modernism of different Buddhist traditions.

Book arts explore the design, creation and binding of a book as an art form. Students of the book arts course will learn about the history of book-making, related terminology, types of books that can be created, and various methods of book construction. Emphasis will be put on the visual aspects of book-making, the structure of books, relationships between the structure and content and on the selection of text, images and other book elements.

Lingnan University’s Summer School also offers a wide variety of language courses for students who would like to sharpen their language proficiency. Those who are preparing to sit for the IELTS examination may consider enrolling in the course “IELTS Preparation”. “Enhancing Putonghua Proficiency Skills” is offered to prepare students with the skills and techniques needed to take the National Putonghua Proficiency Test (PPT). The major contents covered in the two courses are based on those of the IELTS and PPT respectively. In view of the growing interest in studying Chinese Language among non-Chinese speaking students, the course “Chinese Language as a Second Language I” is specially designed for them. Other elementary language courses in French, Japanese, German and Spanish are offered as well.
