Lingnan University (LU) has come in second worldwide for “Quality Education” in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings 2020, released today (22 April).

LU also excels in other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations -- “No Poverty” and “Decent Work and Economic Growth”, ranking 48th and 71st respectively.

Overall, LU is ranked 101-200 among more than 850 universities from 89 countries and regions in the exercise, which assessed the social impact of universities around the world based on the SDGs.

“We are delighted to know that our commitment to, and achievement in, providing quality education are widely recognised by the international academia,” LU President Prof Leonard K Cheng said as he welcomed the results. “As a leading liberal arts university in Asia, LU places the provision of quality education as its primary mission and one of its core values, and all our colleagues work hard to advance our goal of offering excellent and unique learning experience to our students.”

He added that the THE ranking results echo the University’s academic excellence as revealed by the University Accountability Agreements announced by the University Grants Committee (UGC) in July 2019, under which LU received the highest score in the area of “undergraduate satisfaction with the quality and value which they have gained from their teaching and learning experience”, and the second-best score in “undergraduate satisfaction with their overall learning environment” among the eight UGC-funded universities in Hong Kong. “These achievements all affirm the outstanding teaching quality and learning environment at LU.”

This is the first time LU has taken part in the THE University Impact Rankings, submitting five SDGs for assessment. “Thanks to the excellent work and continuous efforts of the University community, the overall results are spectacularly impressive. We shall continue to nurture future leaders through the finest teaching and learning, and to better serve the community by conducting impactful research and providing meaningful services, thus making further contributions to Hong Kong and beyond,” concluded President Cheng.
