Lingnan University’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies (SIS) and Tsinghua Alumni Academia Club (TAAC) organised the “Forum on Frontiers of Science and Engineering 2024” themed “Towards Interdisciplinary Sustainability Research (ISR)” at Lingnan University from 21 to 22 July, promoting cutting-edge research and collaboration across various scientific and engineering disciplines. The conference attracted over 70 renowned scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students from universities across the globe.
The two-day Forum focused on breakthroughs, innovations, and new trends in the broad areas of science and engineering. Participants and guests engaged in diversified and in-depth discussions and exchanges, in particular on interdisciplinary research and sustainability.
Keynote presentations included “Addressing Climate Change: Negative Emission based on AI-Driven Evolution of Advanced Materials” by Prof Chen Xi, Chair Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies and Dean of SIS of Lingnan University; “Challenges and Opportunities of Interpretable AI” by Prof Zeng Wenjun, Vice President – Research and Professor, Eastern Institute of Technology; “Structural Lipidomics and POCT Mass Spectrometry” by Prof Ouyang Zheng, Professor of Precision Instrument at Tsinghua University and Dean of Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School; and “Build an end-to-end scalable data science ecosystem by integrating statistics, ML, and Domain Science” by Prof Lin Xihong, Professor of Department of Biostatistics and Department of Statistics, Harvard University.
Opportunities and technical gaps in Generative AI research areas and others were covered in different sessions. A dozen financial, marketing, and engineering experts, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists also took part in the three panel discussions giving insights into collaborations between scholars and industry practitioners, and talking about academic career paths, and journeys from academic expertise to entrepreneurial ventures.
