Today’s New Year’s Day (1 January) flag-raising ceremony at Lingnan University was held to further national education and the Lingnan community's sense of national identity and citizenship.
Mr William Shum Wai-lam, Council member of Lingnan University; Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science; Mr Ernest Chan Chi-man, Vice-President (Administration); Prof Lau Chi-pang, Associate Vice-President (Institutional Advancement and External Affairs) cum Director of Institutional Advancement and Public Affairs; Prof Li Donghui, Associate Vice-President (Experiential Learning Projects); Prof Bradley R. Barnes, Interim Associate Vice-President (Global Affairs) cum Director of Global Education; and other members of the senior management, staff, and students attended the ceremony and welcomed in 2025 with the national anthem.
The flag-raising ceremony was conducted by the Lingnan University Flag Guard Team. To further strengthen the exchanges and connections between the university and educational institutions in Mainland China, 23 members of the Lingnan University Flag Guard Team travelled to Beijing from 25 to 29 December 2024 to witness the solemn flag-raising ceremony at the Tiananmen Square. They also visited Tsinghua University and Beijing Normal University to exchange experiences with their Flag Guard Teams.
The Lingnan University Flag Guard Team is the first national flag guard team from a tertiary institution in Hong Kong to engage in exchanges with student national flag guards from Mainland universities. In January 2024, The Lingnan University Flag Guard Team also took part in the Guangzhou Study Tour on National Flag-raising which included a visit to the Whampoa Military Academy.
