The Lingnan University Institute for Advanced Study hosts their Summer Workshop 2025, where leading scholars discuss the latest applications of AI in industry

Lingnan University hosted the LUIAS Summer Workshop 2025 (the workshop) on AI Science and Engineering at the university on 13-14 June. The workshop encouraged collaboration between leading scholars and industry professionals, shared the latest research and practical applications, and explored the transformative impact of AI across various fields, including transportation, energy management, healthcare, engineering design, and smart manufacturing. About 80 international scholars and representatives from the AI and data science industry attended in person.

In his welcome speech, Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science at Lingnan University, welcomed the attendees, and said “The rapid development of AI over the past three years has influenced various fields, changing how we create and think, making us more productive and efficient, and driving the growth of smart cities. This technological wave not only brings about innovations, but also prompts people to reflect on their roles and significance. As a data scientist, I firmly believe that the core of innovation lies in human values. Our perspective should go beyond the question of what machines can do to explore what role humans should play, and focus on the unique human values of insight and critical thinking."

Prof Qin believes that teachers and students should actively engage with and practise the concept of human–machine mutual growth, which refers to coexistence with AI, and also highlights interaction and shared development. Lingnan plays a forward-thinking role in educational innovation in the digital era, establishing correct values for students using AI. This workshop is a collaborative platform for top scholars from diverse fields, and integrates cutting-edge technology with the university's holistic education to conduct groundbreaking research supporting societal progress.

The two-day workshop was jointly organised by the Lingnan University Institute for Advanced Study (LUIAS) and the School of Data Science. Fifteen leading scholars from Harvard University, Virginia Tech, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Michigan, the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Rutgers University, Purdue University, the University of Cyprus, Korea University, and Hanyang University gave talks on AI in healthcare, banking and finance, infrastructure engineering, semiconductors and electric vehicles, logistics, supply chains, and machine learning.

Topics included: Machine learning-enabled quality improvement in smart manufacturing systems; Machine learning and generative AI applications in banking; Connecting AI to the cyber-physical world: risks, opportunities and challenges; and The effect of AI on the scientific publication process.

At the opening ceremony, LUIAS conferred the title of Lingnan Fellow on Prof Ignacio E. Grossmann, a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the Rudolph R. and Florence Dean University Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Prof Grossmann is a distinguished chemical engineer known for his pioneering work in process systems engineering. He has made important contributions to optimisation, decision-making, chemical production, and supply chain management.
