Lingnan President S. Joe Qin visits the Ocean University of China and Shandong Muping No.1 Senior High School to promote cross-border collaboration

President Qin gives a talk on “The New Era of AI and Data Science” to Shandong Muping No.1 Senior High School students.

Planning to further expand academic exchanges and collaboration with Mainland institutions, Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science at Lingnan University visited the Shandong Muping No.1 Senior High School and the Ocean University of China in early September 2025. In-depth discussions focused on student exchanges and research partnerships between higher education institutions, and President Qin outlined Lingnan’s 130-year-old history since it was founded in 1888, and explained its guiding motto of “Education for Service”. He emphasised that Lingnan is a comprehensive liberal arts research university in arts and sciences for the digital age, rapidly expanding into emerging fields such as data science and artificial intelligence (AI), and dedicated to nurturing talent with a global perspective and social responsibility. Ms Ju Jing, Party Secretary of the Shandong Muping No.1 Senior High School, described the school’s vision for high-quality education, its rigorous teaching system, and outstanding academic achievements. Both expressed their desire to strengthen exchanges and cooperation, and to tell more of the better high school students about Lingnan University.
Following the meeting, President Qin gave a talk on “The New Era of AI and Data Science”, where he told the students about personal growth and career development based on his own academic and professional experiences. Using interesting case studies, President Qin illustrated AI’s development vividly, and described Lingnan’s innovative practices and research achievements in big data and AI.
Then on 7 September, President Qin visited the Ocean University of China, where he was warmly received by Mr Li Ming, the Party Secretary. President Qin spoke about Lingnan University’s development, progress, and particular strengths, and expressed hopes for academic cooperation between the two universities and joint postgraduate training in fields such as marine biodiversity, conservation, and big data. Mr Li replied that both universities have a solid foundation for cooperation in management studies, translation, and AI, and hoped that the visit would be an opportunity to increase collaboration in marine sciences, biology, and data science, further encouraging faculty and student relations, academic exchanges, and joint research, in order to achieve mutual benefits and develop along the same lines.
President Qin also visited the Ocean Science and Technology Achievement Exhibition at the Ocean University of China, and praised the university’s multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary marine research, as well as its valuable contributions to China’s knowledge of oceans. Mr Liu Yong, Vice President, and representatives from the relevant departments, of the Ocean University of China, were also present.
