The campus of Lingnan University became a whirlwind journey across continents as the Office of Global Education (OGE) and Office of Student Affairs (OSA) hosted International Day 2025 “Around the World” recently. It was a dynamic celebration of cultural diversity that brought the entire world to its doorstep, and drew over 800 participants, a remarkable 60 per cent increase in attendance.
The festival, officially opened by distinguished Prof Raymond Chan Hon-fu, Acting President and Lam Man Tsan Chair Professor of Scientific Computing; Prof Li Donghui, Associate Vice-President (Experiential Learning Projects); and Prof Bradley R. Barnes, Special Advisor to President on Internationalization and Director of Global Education, transformed the campus into a bustling international marketplace where students explored the rich tapestry of global cultures through interactive booths and wonderful performances.
“This event embodies our commitment to fostering on-campus internationalisation while bringing exchange opportunities to life,” Prof Barnes said in his welcome address. “We’re not just celebrating diversity – we’re creating universal citizens who will thrive in our interconnected world.”
The celebration aligned perfectly with the Hong Kong Government’s vision of establishing the city as an important international post-secondary education hub, and demonstrated the university’s dedication to cultivating a truly international learning environment.
Festival-goers were treated to a fabulous line-up of student performances that proclaimed different cultures’ artistic brilliance. The stage came alive with the mesmerising movements of Kamazhay Dance, soulful singing by a local student, and then a high-energy street dance that had everyone on their feet.
Beyond the main stage, in the centre of the festival were 13 lively student-run booths, each offering an authentic glimpse into their respective culture. Their East Asian heritage could be explored at the China stands, and European charm came alive in the stalls of France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain, while the majesty of the Himalayan and South Asian regions was represented by Bhutan, India, Nepal and Pakistan. Students discovered the hidden treasures of Central Asia through Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic, and experienced the American Halloween trick-or-treat culture and Mexican passion.
International Day 2025 has shown the campus’ enthusiasm for cross-cultural engagement. It is not just an event - it is evidence of a vibrant, multicultural community, and a launching pad for students’ future international adventures.
