LingnanSpeaks 2026 showcases students’ public speaking skills in English

The Centre for English and Additional Languages (CEAL) of Lingnan University held their second annual LingnanSpeaks English Speech Competition on 14 February 2026. The two-round grand finale was attended by staff, students and their friends, and three students were chosen to represent Lingnan at the Hong Kong regional finale of the China Daily 21st Century Cup.

Ten students who had been selected in auditions two weeks earlier were invited onto the stage one by one to present a prepared speech on “The Chinese Dream in a Global Context”. The judges were two academic members of staff from CEAL and a student who took part in the contest last year.

After the prepared speech, the top five students went through to the improvised speech round, where they battled it out for the prizes. After delivering her impromptu speech on “It is the responsibility of the family to take care of the elderly,” fourth-year Economics major Seemi Nisar was named the winner, and first-year Cultural Studies major Arina Missina and first-year English major Hoang Thu Trang came second and third respectively.
