The Lingnan University Lacrosse Team is administered by the Wu Jieh Yee School of Interdisciplinary Studies as a platform for students from diverse backgrounds to meet and share their interest in and passion for the sport.
The Lingnan University Lacrosse Team was runner-up on 22 March in the All Hong Kong Tertiary Students Lacrosse Competition organised by the Hong Kong, China Lacrosse Association. This is the fourth time the team has played in the competition, and their best result yet. They defeated last year’s champion, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and runner-up, The Education University of Hong Kong, and then won against Hong Kong Metropolitan University in the semifinals, where they faced the University of Hong Kong, which has several members of the very strong Hong Kong, China national team. But Lingnan fought back fiercely, and first runner-up is an outstanding achievement.
This year’s competition featured six universities and was highly competitive. The Lingnan team, led by Coach Godwin So Ka-ho, went from fourth place last year to first runner-up this year, and after the competition, he said that their success was due to unity and teamwork.
The team’s female captain, Yang Jingyi (Chinese, Year 2), started playing lacrosse two years ago and, having progressed rapidly, is able to lead the team’s overall offense and defense.
Other more experienced team members were also happy to discuss competitions they have played in. The male team captain, Ben Fung Yu-ching (Diploma of Applied Education in Sports and Physical Training), was a member of the Hong Kong China U20 team and is a current member of the high performance team. He often leads the players in training, applying his knowledge of sports coaching.
The Lingnan University Lacrosse Team is administered by the Wu Jieh Yee School of Interdisciplinary Studies as a platform for students from diverse backgrounds to come together and share their interest in and passion for the sport. Internship opportunities are also provided for students in the Sports Coaching and Event Management programme, and it is hoped that more students will take up lacrosse in the future.
