Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science at Lingnan University, was invited to the celebrations marking the 130th anniversary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) on 7 and 8 April 2026. While he was there, President Qin held in-depth discussions with guests from universities from around the world, strengthened inter-university connections, and explored new pathways for artificial intelligence (AI) to empower education and technological development.
On 7 April, President Qin attended the Forum on AI Empowering the Integrated Development of Education, Science and Technology, and Talent, where he discussed Lingnan University’s practices and insights integrating AI with a liberal arts education and cultivating interdisciplinary talents with peers from the international higher education community. The forum brought together administrators and experts from research funding and regulatory bodies as well as foremost universities, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Peking University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Khalifa University of Science and Technology, Nanyang Technological University, and the University of Ottawa. Key topics such as the transformation of higher education in the AI era were explored, and President Qin and other university leaders were invited to the inauguration of the SJTU AI Innovation & Entrepreneurship Initiative.
The following day, President Qin attended the Grand 130th Anniversary Celebration Ceremony at the Fok Ying Tung Sports Center on the SJTU Minhang Campus with university leaders, scholars, and distinguished guests from more than 130 universities worldwide. They discussed the mission and responsibilities of higher education in this new era. This demonstrates conclusively Lingnan University’s commitment to increasing exchanges and cooperation with top Chinese Mainland universities, and active engagement in global higher education dialogues.
