Lingnan University and Sun Yat-sen University renew MoU to increase strategic collaboration

On 10 April 2026, Prof Liu Chenggong, Secretary of the CPC Sun Yat-sen University Committee, led a delegation to visit Lingnan University. They were warmly received by Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science, Prof Raymond Chan Hon-fu, Vice-President (Academics) cum Provost and Lam Man Tsan Chair Professor of Scientific Computing, Prof Sam Kwong Tak-wu, Associate Vice-President (Strategic Research) and J.K. Lee Chair Professor of Computational Intelligence, and other Lingnan representatives.

President Qin and Secretary Liu signed a university-level Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) witnessed by representatives of both institutions on behalf of Lingnan University and Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), laying a solid foundation for increasing all-round collaboration between them.

President Qin said that Lingnan is developing vigorous research-intensive liberal arts education in the digital era, and pressing ahead with interdisciplinary research innovation, disciplinary restructuring, and campus expansion. Through the Cooperative Development Committee, the two universities have already worked together extensively constructing research platforms, and sharing resources and academic exchanges, and the management teams of both communicate regularly. Recently, Lingnan has also reached practical cooperation intentions with the SYSU Institute of Advanced Studies Hong Kong. President Qin looks forward with the renewal of the MoU to further expanding the breadth and depth of teamwork between the two universities, achieving resource complementarity and sharing strengths.

In his address, Secretary Liu thanked Lingnan for their generous hospitality, and pointed out that SYSU and Lingnan enjoy a solid foundation of mutual support and compatible development philosophies, and their strong historical connection underpins their joint progress. He praised Lingnan University’s remarkable achievements in the integration of arts and sciences and digital transformation, and anticipates greater participation, particularly through the SYSU Institute of Advanced Studies Hong Kong, in digital intelligence-enabled education, interdisciplinary innovation, and joint talent introduction and nurturing. Secretary Liu also expressed the hope that there will be more substantive synergy in cultivating the best innovative talents and producing positive research results.

Following the signing ceremony, the two parties exchanged views on joint talent training, collaborative research, interdisciplinary platform construction, and promoting the effective implementation of various initiatives. The SYSU delegation also toured the Lingnan campus, and visited the Young Snow Art Exhibition Hall and United Nations University Hub on Humanitarian Innovation and Technology at Lingnan University (UNU Hub at Lingnan University) to gain a comprehensive understanding of Lingnan’s educational philosophy, campus culture, and development achievements.
