31 Oct 2026

Organised by the Education Bureau (EDB) of the Government of Hong Kong SAR, and co-organised by the Hong Kong and South China Historical Research Programme (HKSCHRP) of Lingnan University, the “2026/27 Territory-wide Junior Secondary Chinese History and Culture Quiz Competition: Commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the Victory of the Red Army's Long March” Grand Final and Prize Presentation Ceremony was held at Cognitio College (Kowloon), today, 31 October. The four finalist teams emerged from more than 32,000 junior secondary students from over 200 secondary schools across the Hong Kong SAR.

Commemorating the 90th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army's Long March, this year's competition aimed to help students understand the historical significance of the Long March, enable them to appreciate the Long March spirit, and strengthen their patriotic sentiments. There were almost 50 per cent more participants compared to last year, and their enthusiasm not only indicates the event's widespread popularity, but also its success in encouraging more young people to learn about our nation's history and culture, actively supporting the Government's strategy on patriotic education.

Dr Jeff Sze Chun-fai, the Under Secretary for Education of the EDB, was invited to be the Officiating Guest at the Grand Final and Prize Presentation Ceremony, and Prof Lau Chi-pang, Special Advisor to President on Publicity cum Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Professor of the Department of History, and Coordinator of HKSCHRP at Lingnan University, delivered a keynote address. Prof Vincent Leung Sueh-han, Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) of the Faculty of Arts and Associate Professor of the Department of History at Lingnan University, Prof Tam Ka-chai, Associate Professor of the Department of History at Hong Kong Baptist University, and Prof Chu Ming-kin, Associate Professor of the School of Chinese at The University of Hong Kong, were honorary judges, and Mr Paul Lee Kin-wan, Principal Education Officer (Curriculum Development) of the EDB, was a guest at the Ceremony.

This year's competition focused on the history of the Red Army's Long March, as well as several periods of Chinese history and knowledge of Chinese culture. The four finalist teams competed for the championship over three mixed-format rounds. To make learning Chinese history more interesting for youngsters, the EDB and Lingnan University designed a special challenge session titled "Piecing Together the Long March Road" for the Grand Final where the four teams had to collect photos of cultural relics, poems, and strategy cards related to the Long March, collaborating in the Long March spirit of unity and mutual assistance. For the competition, school cheerleading teams unleashed their creativity by composing slogans based on the "Spirit of the Long March" to boost the morale of their teams.

After rounds of intense competition, Po Leung Kuk Tang Yuk Tien College won the championship, Ying Wa College was the first runner-up, and TWGHs Wong Fut Nam College and Yan Oi Tong Tin Ka Ping Secondary School were the second and third runners-up.

Dr Jeff Sze Chun-fai stated at the Prize Presentation Ceremony that 90 years ago, the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army completed the epic Long March with extraordinary perseverance and unwavering conviction, demonstrating the indomitable spirit of the Chinese nation. He hoped the competition would deepen students' understanding of Chinese history and culture, adding that segments such as the "Piecing Together the Long March Road" challenge allowed students to demonstrate the Red Army's spirit of arduous struggle, strict discipline, unity, mutual assistance, and courageous perseverance. He encouraged students to inherit and carry forward the Long March spirit, navigate their own Long March paths well, and contribute to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Prof Lau Chi-pang said, "Chinese history and culture embody profound wisdom. Through this competition, we hope to deepen young people's understanding of major national historic events. The Red Army’s Long March involved arduous trekking and making difficult choices in extreme environments. The perseverance, teamwork, and commitment demonstrated are a precious spiritual wealth of the Chinese nation. It also connects history with moral education, giving students a sense of national identity, cultural confidence, and the ability to distinguish historical facts through enjoyable learning, and translating historical wisdom into a driving force for the future.”

To help students prepare for the competition, the organisers compiled special reading materials on the Long March, with a “One-minute Introduction” to help them grasp its history and core spirit in a simple and accessible manner. Looking ahead, the EDB will also organise various commemorative activities for the 90th anniversary, aiming to deepen students' understanding of this history and encourage them to learn from the perseverance of their forebears, thereby cultivating their sense of national identity and correct values.
