Students showcase art talent at STEP BY STEP exhibition Title (繁)*

STEP BY STEP exhibited LU students’ works of art created under the supervision of Artist-in-Residence Mak Yuen-yan, and was held from 10 to 22 December 2020.

To Mak, who was the instructor and curator of the programme, it was more than just an exhibition.

“My experience was different to how I imagined it would be because of the pandemic,” the filmmaker recalls. “Originally, the workshop I planned had many face-to-face activities, but because of online and hybrid teaching, I redesigned the course format and changed the students' group work project to an exhibition where each student had to create their own work of art.”

“This decision enabled me to understand each individual student's thoughts and character. It brought me closer to these young people, and this will inspire my own work in the future,” she says.

“I originally hoped that my students could learn more about their own thoughts and love and hatred through story development and practice, but their work is better than I had dared to expect. As curator, I am thrilled to have had such a memorable experience with them in 2020.”

Creation is not just a one-off; every experiment also contributes to the next step by step. Mak believes.
