Connecting through culture: Lingnan University Lion Dance and Martial Arts Team
The Lingnan University Lion Dance and Martial Arts Team is the guest performer at the Centennial Celebration of Sun Yat-sen University.
The Lingnan University Lion Dance and Martial Arts Team is dedicated to preserving Chinese culture. As the only Lion Dance and Martial Arts Team in Hong Kong's higher education sector to operate according to sports team standards, they not only perform at important events on campus, but have also been invited to perform at the Celebration for the 75th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China – The Higher Education Sector of Hong Kong, and the Centennial Celebration of Sun Yat-sen University.
The Lion Dance Team has received numerous accolades, including the Gold Lion Award at the National Day Cup Traditional Lion Dance Invitational Competition, and the Merit Award at the Hong Kong Open Dragon and Lion Dance Championships - Ground Performance.
We interviewed the team captain, Wan Chunxiu (Accounting and Corporate Governance, Year 2), the vice-captain, Meng Xiangju (Global Liberal Arts, Year 4), and Chen Ying (Sociology, Year 2). They have developed a strong team spirit through their lion dance performances, enhancing their university experience at Lingnan.
Wan Chunxiu, who has been learning martial arts since high school days, expressed that joining the team has helped her establish a sense of belonging at Lingnan, especially as a mainland student in Hong Kong. She is extremely grateful for the university's support: “Lingnan University provides ample resources. Without Lingnan's strong support, it would be impossible for us to be the first Lion Dance and Martial Arts Team to be recognised as a sports team in the higher education sector in Hong Kong.” Looking ahead, Wan Chunxiu hopes the team can participate in the Hong Kong Open Dragon & Lion Dance Competition in 2025, aiming to lead the team to new heights.
