岭南大学的历史可追溯至1888年，当时美国长老会在广州沙基金利埠创办了一所名为格致书院的高等学府。是年3月28日，格致书院正式授课，第一批学生只有三十人。
1893年，格致书院脱离美国长老会，在纽约另组董事局，成为一所不属于任何教会的基督教大学。其时中国政局正值多事之秋，格致书院难免成为仇外份子滋扰的对象。1900年，曾经在格致书院就学的史坚如谋刺两广总督德寿事败，格致书院引起了满清政府的注意。为免卷入政治旋涡，格致书院迁往澳门暂避。1903年，格致书院改名Canton Christian College，中文校名亦改为岭南学堂，是为「岭南」用作校名之始。1904年，岭南学堂决定迁回广州，并在广州河南康乐村购下三十多英亩土地，成为日后岭南大学的永久校园。
随着永久校址的启用，岭南学堂的发展蒸蒸日上。1911年，校友司徒卫从康乐校园北望的景致得到启发，设计出一个饶有意思的校徽。圆形校徽的上半部是广州的白云山，横亘其中的是珠江，其南岸有茂盛的荔枝树；下半部是康乐校园的曲水细流，富有诗意。这个圆形校徽经过多次细微的修饰，一直沿用至今。另外，当时岭南学生参加省运动会的时候，啦啦队所用的校旗以红色为底色，上面印有「岭南」两个灰色大字。自此「红」、「灰」二色成为了岭南精神的代名词。
1912年9月，学堂的中文名称改为「岭南学校」，英文名称则不变。1918年，岭南学校终于发展出整套大学课程，并且颁发学位证书予当年修毕课程的三名毕业生。这时候，美国的哈佛、耶鲁、哥伦比亚、史丹福，以及加拿大的多伦多等十五所著名大学正式接受岭南毕业生入读研究院课程。
1926年，国民政府颁布私立学校立案规程，禁止外国人在中国办大学，岭南学校亦在被禁之列。岭南学校随即成立以华人为主的校董会，以取代纽约董事局，并准备由华人接手主理校务。1927年1月，校董会推举一直襄助校务的钟荣光为校长，李应林为副校长，展开华人领导岭南的新一页。岭南亦正式易名岭南大学，英文名称亦相应改为Lingnan University。岭南大学于是年3月向国民政府呈请立案，确定为国际性的私立基督教大学。从1927年至抗战前夕，岭南大学在原有的文理学科上先后增设农学院、商学院、工学院、医学院等部门；又开办中学、小学、华侨班等附属组织；并且在香港设立岭南分校，成为中国南方一所举足轻重的教育机构。
抗战期间，在1938年，岭南大学迁移往香港，而早于1937年，附属中学已迁往香港青山湾梁园。岭南大学借用香港大学的校舍继续授课；农学院则租用屯门蓝地的农场。1941年12月，香港沦陷，时为校长的李应林率领岭南大学师生辗转逃亡至粤北韶关。在国民政府和美国基金会的协助下，岭南大学最后在曲江大村复校，并将校园命名为「岭大村」。后来战事日渐蔓延，岭南大学只好由曲江转移往东江梅县。
1945年抗战胜利，岭南大学重回广州康乐村的校园，李应林承担起复课的任务，完成了艰巨的重建工作。1948年8月，陈序经接任校长一职，迅即将岭南大学的学术地位提升到一个新的境界。陈序经是著名的全盘西化论的倡导者，在海内外享有盛誉。他立意要将岭南大学打造成全国最优秀的学府。岭南大学优秀的师资在战后的广东造就了一个人文荟萃、精英云集的局面，其盛况可谓一时无两。
1952年底，全国高等院校进行调整，岭南大学的康乐校园变成了中山大学的校园，原有的课程或科系拼入广州其他院校，曾经是国内著名学府的岭南大学正式解体，结束了六十多年曲折而光辉的教育道路。
自1952年院校调整以来，岭南大学校友一直以复校为奋斗的共同目标。1967年9月，岭南校友在香港成立岭南书院有限公司筹办岭南书院，开始了岭南大学复校的第一步。为结集资源以推动岭南教育事业在香港的发展，岭南书院有限公司更于1969年与岭南中学有限公司合并，组成岭南教育机构有限公司。
创设伊始，岭南书院借用岭南中学的课室上课。第一年取录了约一百名新生入读大学先修班，三十名入读一年级，其中有部分学生在学校寄宿。后来得到热心校友支持奔走，岭南书院先后兴建了教学及行政大楼、大礼堂、语言实验室、图书馆及教职员宿舍，具备了专上学院的基本规模。1974年，岭南书院师生的努力得到了回报；超过七十间北美的大学承认岭南书院具有高等学府的地位。1978年，岭南书院成功向教育署注册为专上学院，并随即易名岭南学院，同时推行由政府资助的专上学制。1978年，岭南开办「二二一」制专上课程；即两年预科、两年高等文凭及一年荣誉文凭课程。转制以后学生人数渐增，岭南的整体发展空间亦随之扩大。
岭南校友以十年时间建立了一所颇具规模的专上学院，为此后的发展打下了坚固的基础。1983年，陈佐舜校长接掌岭南，肩负提升岭南学术地位的重任。陈校长在任期间大量延聘人才，重组学术部门，并改革课程结构，推行通识教育，为学术评审作好准备。1983年，岭南进行学科课程改革，包括停办音乐学院、成立社会科学院、并推行通识教育课程。1986年，岭南增设翻译课程。至此，预科课程停办，学院将资源集中投放于荣誉文凭课程的发展之上。1987年12月，英国「国家学历颁授委员会」对岭南进行全面评审。对于岭南多年来进步神速，评审团予以高度评价，并认为岭南的学术水平足以媲美「大学及理工教育资助委员会」辖下的院校。
1988年，政府决定增加对岭南的拨款，以推动荣誉文凭课程的发展。同时，政府亦计划邀请岭南加入「大学及理工教育资助委员会」，升格为开办学位课程的高等学府。1991年，岭南的努力奋斗得到了重大的回报，岭南在「香港学术评审局」的全面评审中取得上佳的评价。评审团成员特别推许岭南教职员资历良好，更对学生的杰出表现留下了深刻的印象。评审局因此认为岭南有优良的学术条件开办学位课程。最后政府接纳建议，于1991年把岭南升格纳入「大学及理工资助委员会」体系，成为本港颁授学位的大专院校之一，首先开办了翻译及社会科学两个学士学位课程，1994年增办中文及工商管理学位课程。
岭南为了进一步发展大学教育，于1995年迁入屯门新校舍，并由陈坤耀教授接任校长。新校园设计将广州岭南大学的原貌融入现代建筑的风格之中，传承岭南大学1888年以来的优良传统。同年开办哲学硕士课程。1998年，岭南获得自我评审资格，并于1999年正名为岭南大学。
进入2000年，岭南不断向前迈进，增设研究生课程，成立持续进修及社区学院，为香港以至邻近地区提供多元化的优质大学教育。
为了进一步深化博雅教育的成效，岭南更于2001年起推出「综合学习课程」计划，课程现时包括公民教育、智育发展、体育发展、群育及情绪发展、美育发展和宿舍教育六大范畴的非学分课程，鼓励学生在课堂以外扩展多元学习的经验，以达致「学问渊博、为人儒雅」的目的。
2003年教资会「教与学质素保证过程检讨」专家小组对岭大作出正面评价，高度赞扬岭大在提升教学质素工作上的杰出表现。同年《信报财经月刊》发表其委托的教学质素调查，岭大的教学质素位居八大院校之首，再度印证了岭大推动博雅教育的卓越成果。
2006年教资会主持的「2006年研究评审」报告中，岭大的整体研究表现指数位列全港八大院校的第四名，仅次于三所「研究型大学」。岭大的教师素来坚持以学生为本的教学原则，格外重视与学生建立良好而互信的关系，同时又紧守学术的本分，在研究工作上推陈出新，充分展示了岭南教师队伍的专业精神。
In 2023, a new chapter began in Lingnan University's history with the appointment of Professor S. Joe Qin as President. His leadership marked the beginning of a transformative era, steering the University toward becoming a comprehensive institution in arts and sciences for the digital age, with a strong emphasis on impactful research and innovation.
Leadership and Strategic Development
A significant milestone in the University’s governance was the passage of the Lingnan University (Amendment) Ordinance 2023 by the Legislative Council, enabling the appointment of up to three Vice-Presidents. This structural enhancement strengthened leadership and facilitated greater engagement with local, national, and international stakeholders.
The newly appointed Vice-Presidents are:
- Professor Raymond Chan Hon-fu, Vice-President (Academic) and Provost
- Professor Xin Yao, Vice-President (Research and Innovation)
- Mr Ernest Chan Chi-man, Vice-President (Administration)
As Lingnan approaches its 60th anniversary of re-establishment in Hong Kong in 2027, it launched the “Lingnan-60 Global Talent Recruitment” initiative in January 2024. The initiative aims to recruit over 60 internationally renowned faculty in interdisciplinary fields pivotal to a digitalised future. By November 2025, the University had recruited 30 top-tier scholars, further enriching its academic community.
Academic and Research Development
Lingnan has embraced digital transformation as a cornerstone of its educational approach. Since 2023, all students and staff have had access to advanced artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT and DeepSeek, fostering innovation in teaching, learning, and research. Beginning in the 2024/25 academic year, the University introduced Generative AI as a compulsory common core course for all first-year students. This initiative underscores Lingnan's commitment to preparing graduates for the evolving technological landscape.
To support this transformation, the University’s Teaching and Learning Centre launched the IDEAL-GenAI Platform, a pioneering tool for AI-assisted course development that has gained adoption beyond the Lingnan community.
In 2024, Lingnan established the School of Data Science (SDS) and the Lingnan Institute for Advanced Study (LUIAS). The SDS provides comprehensive education that blends technical skills with critical thinking, preparing students to tackle real-world challenges. LUIAS brings together world-class scholars on fractional appointments to promote interdisciplinary collaboration. Nobel Laureate Professor Samuel C.C. Ting, Lingnan's 2023 Honorary Doctorate recipient, serves as the Institute's Honorary Director.
Advancing Research and Collaboration
The University has expanded its research footprint through strengthened regional and global partnerships. A Memorandum of Understanding with South China Agricultural University enhanced postgraduate programmes, student exchanges, scientific research, and training. Additional agreements with Rizhao City, Shandong Hi-Speed Group, and others supported research, innovation, and the commercialisation of technological achievements.
The opening of the Shenzhen Research Institute in early 2025 marked another milestone. It serves as a platform for research in creative and cultural industries and fosters deeper engagement in the Greater Bay Area. A Cooperation Framework Agreement with the Center of International Innovation for Technology and Science (CIITs) strengthened Lingnan's industrial and research integration.
The 2023/24 academic year witnessed a record-breaking year in research funding. Lingnan achieved a 17% increase in funding from the Research Grants Council (RGC), including seven projects, each receiving close to or more than HK$1 million. The University was also awarded seven postdoctoral fellowships under the Hong Kong RGC Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme, achieving a 78% success rate.
A significant institutional achievement was Lingnan’s designation as a Supporting Institution (Hong Kong and Macau) by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), enabling its scholars to participate fully in national-level research funding and talent schemes.
Lingnan also became a Participating Institution in three major RGC-funded projects:
- A HK$61 million Theme-based Research Scheme project on sustainable supply chain finance, co-led by Prof Jia Li
- A HK$33 million Strategic Topics Grant project on construction industry technology, co-led by Professor Sam Kwong Tak-wu
- A HK$7 million Research Impact Fund project on online digital service platforms, co-led by Professor S. Joe Qin
These collaborations reflect Lingnan’s emergence as a research-driven university addressing global challenges through interdisciplinary excellence.
Student Growth and Global Profile
Lingnan’s appeal to students has continued to grow. The 2024/25 admissions exercise saw record-breaking enrolment. The University welcomed over 1,300 new undergraduates and 3,300 new postgraduates, bringing the total student population to 7,700, representing more than 40 countries. This diverse academic community reflects Lingnan's rising global reputation.
Innovation and Societal Impact
Lingnan University has continued to make meaningful contributions to innovation and social impact. A notable highlight was the development of PureAura, a mini air purifier created by the Lingnan Entrepreneurship Initiative (LEI). By the end of 2024, PureAura had achieved a Grand Slam of 14 international design awards, including the Good Design Award Best 100—often hailed as the "Oscars of Design in the East." In line with the University’s motto, Education for Service, 7,500 units were distributed to households in need.
At the 49th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions in 2024, Lingnan scholars were recognised for their outstanding technological advancements:
- Professor Sam Kwong earned a gold medal for his innovative AI technology that measures hair thickness and follicles, and a silver medal for enhancing image quality in low-light environments using AI.
- Professor Xie Haoran received a silver medal for his cutting-edge invention for railway signalling system testing.
Lingnan made an impressive debut at the 4th Asia Exhibition of Innovations and Inventions in Hong Kong in 2024. AI projects led by Professor Sam Kwong won three awards—a gold medal for a socially impactful AI project and two silver medals for additional AI-based innovations.
Faculty Achievements and Recognition
Lingnan’s faculty continue to gain prestigious recognition for their academic and research excellence:
- Professor S. Joe Qin was elected a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences (HKAES) in 2023 and a Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2024.
- Professor Sam Kwong was elected a Fellow of the U.S. National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and a Fellow of the HKAES in 2023.
- Professor Xin Yao, Vice-President (Research and Innovation), was elected a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering (HKEA) in 2024.
- Professor Paulina Wong was elected a Member of the Young Member Section of the HKAES in 2024.
In 2024, 14% of Lingnan University’s academic staff were ranked among the world’s top 2% of scientists, based on the global citation database compiled by Stanford University. Additionally, four Lingnan scholars were recognised as Best Computer Science Scientists by Research.com in 2024: Professor S. Joe Qin, Professor Xin Yao, Professor Sam Kwong, and Professor Xie Haoran. These accolades reflect Lingnan’s growing academic stature and global research impact.
Infrastructure and Campus Expansion
To support the growing demand for high-performance research, Lingnan launched its first High-Performance Computing (HPC) Data Centre, HPC NexT, in February 2025. Delivering over 6,000 TFLOPS of processing power, HPC NexT significantly accelerates AI-driven research, reducing project computation times from months to hours.
The University also expanded its physical footprint with the opening of Lingnan@WestKowloon, a 20,000-square-foot learning hub in the M+ Tower, in 2023/24. This urban extension enhances teaching, collaboration, and community outreach in one of Hong Kong’s most vibrant cultural districts.
