SDG 13 Climate Action

Climate change is a global challenge that affects everyone, everywhere.

Climate change and pollution directly affect the health and well-being of every member of society as well as our planet - not only mankind but animals and plants too. Research at Lingnan, in particular by the Science Unit, seeks the best solutions to problems arising from climate change and pollution.

Climate Action Plan

Lingnan University is committed to taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by developing a low-carbon campus and pursuing carbon neutrality by 2049.

As part of our commitment to SDG 13: Climate Action, the University has developed a Climate Action Plan, which sets out our strategies and actions to reduce carbon emissions, enhance campus sustainability, and promote climate resilience across the University community.

Our climate action plan is shared with the local community and government at key events and meetings, including through HKSCC.

Advancing Climate Action through Circular Food Systems

The Bi Loop Nature Based Food Waste Regeneration Pilot Programme converts over three tonnes of food waste annually into organic fertiliser and fish feed, reducing landfill emissions. Together with the reusable lunchbox lending initiative, the programme advances waste reduction, circularity, and community support, contributing to SDG 13: Climate Action.

Innovating Climate Education through VR and AI

This interdisciplinary project integrates VR and AI to deliver immersive, inclusive sustainability education. Through global partnerships, it enhances engagement, accessibility, and real world learning on climate issues, benefiting diverse learners across Hong Kong, Malaysia, and China, and supporting SDG 13: Climate Action.

Driving Climate Action in Hospitality through Eco Innovation

Co hosted by Lingnan University, A Plastic Ocean Foundation, and Langham Hospitality Group, the Eco Innovation Challenge 2025 engaged students and the public in developing green waste management solutions for the hospitality sector, fostering industry collaboration, innovation, and climate awareness in support of SDG 13: Climate Action.

Understanding Heat Stress Responses in Intertidal Species

This project examines how thermoregulatory behaviours help slow moving intertidal species survive rising heat stress on tropical rocky shores. By analysing thermal cues and energetic costs, the research improves predictions of species responses to climate change, supporting SDG 14: Life Below Water and SDG 13: Climate Action.

DACR: AI-Powered Autonomous Robot Revolutionizing Carbon Capture for a Sustainable Future

The DACR robot utilizes an innovative amine-loaded solid adsorbent and AI-driven autonomous navigation to capture CO2 from the air. Its intelligent control system ensures fully automated, efficient capture, with applications in agriculture, carbonated water production, and chemical feedstocks. This technology supports carbon neutrality and environmental sustainability in urban and industrial settings.

Combating Food Waste: Lingnan University's Bugs War Initiative

In pursuit of a zero-waste campus, Lingnan University launched the Bugs War Against Food Waste Project to transform food waste into organic fertilizer and animal feed. The initiative has engaged over 450 participants through educational tours, promoting sustainability and biodiversity conservation while processing over 280 kg of food waste since May 2023.

Empowering Future Leaders: Lingnan University's MSc in Sustainability and Environmental Analytics

Lingnan University launched its Master of Science in Sustainability and Environmental Analytics (SEA) in 2023-2024, focusing on sustainable development and environmental data analysis. With elective clusters in "Sustainable City" and "Data Analytics," the program equips students with essential skills to tackle climate change and advance sustainability practices.

New Concentration “Environment and Sustainability”

Concentration on Environment and Sustainability under the Master of Cities and Governance focuses on sustainability and emerging environmental problems, highlighting the unfolding topic on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) concepts and planning.
