Lingnan University revamps undergraduate programmes to respond to student and job market demands

To respond to the development and changes in society and the job market, LU has recently announced modifications and new initiatives for some government-funded undergraduate programmes starting in 2022/23.

The interdisciplinary programme Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Global Liberal Arts will be remodelled as the Bachelor of Liberal Arts (Hons) in Global Development and Sustainability.

Focusing on international skills through a multi-campus experience and a multidisciplinary curriculum, this programme encourages students to apply creative and critical thinking to development and sustainability challenges in the areas of political and social policy, business and economy, culture and community, and the environment. By studying abroad on two or more continents and completing a capstone project, students learn to address central human problems while considering both local and global consequences critically.

In the next academic year, the Faculty of Arts will offer the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Animation and Digital Arts through JUPAS, which provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to creative arts education that stimulates students’ innovative thinking and creativity.

Striking a balance between technology and creativity, the programme allows students to learn a wide range of essential knowledge from art history, film art, design to 2D and 3D animation as well as concepts and application of virtual reality. Students will receive comprehensive historical and technical training of animation and digital arts through hands-on learning and rigorous mentorship.

The Faculty of Arts Department of Translation is revising its existing programme to “BA in Translation, Cross-Cultural Studies, and Corporate Communication”, offering students a top-quality bilingual and cross-cultural course giving them the linguistic and cultural adaptability to find jobs in translation and related fields such as education, journalism, business administration, and public relations.

In the new curriculum, electives will encompass bilingual studies, cross-cultural studies, and multimedia and corporate communication, with required courses giving students foundational training in translation and interpreting. Multimedia and corporate communication courses will offer students another newly designed option, addressing how translation adapts to the transition from print to digital culture, the globalisation of Chinese literature and culture, and IT.

Starting from the 2022 intake, the Faculty of Social Sciences will change to programme-based admission from the current broad-based admission, and offer six Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) programmes for JUPAS. These are Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Health and Social Service Management, and Social and Public Policy Studies.

To cater better to the demand for talent and development of the commercial sector in the region, the Faculty of Business will revise the titles of four Majors and related curricula of the Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) to “Accounting and Corporate Governance”, “Digital Business”, “Human Resource Management and Entrepreneurship” and “Marketing and Social Media”.
