Lingnan and Nanjing Universities’ interdisciplinary summer exchange
From 4 to 9 July, Lingnan University’s Science Unit held a field-based summer course on Earth system science and sustainable development with the School of Earth Science and Engineering at Nanjing University in Nanjing, Mainland China. The summer school consisted of 12 Lingnan and 16 local students led by Prof Helen Geng Hongyan, Assistant Professor of Teaching of the Unit, and geological and cultural activities included field studies, museum and factory visits, simulations, seminars, and presentations.
Field trips to key geological sites such as Yuanrendong (猿人洞), Mufushan (幕府山), and Yanziji (燕子磯) allowed participants to study carbonate rocks, homo sapiens records, and the Yangtze River (長江), giving them firsthand experience of earth sciences and insights into natural landscapes in China.
Students visited the Minerals Museum, where Nanjing University’s valuable mineral collections are exhibited, and a carbon neutral factory showcasing the groundbreaking applications of science and technology in carbon capture and storage, and how they contribute to sustainable development goals.
A real highlight was the simulation, where students engaged in rigorous discussions and debates, ultimately reaching a consensus on smart development with strong emphasis on environmental concerns.
The summer course was well received as it promoted interdisciplinary exchange between arts, business, social sciences, and science students from both universities. It also improved students’ communication skills and understanding of real-world challenges in sustainable development.
