Book launch of 'Son of Hong Kong, Historian of China: The English Writings of Ming K. Chan'
'Son of Hong Kong, Historian of China: The English Writings of Ming K. Chan' was published in 2024 and edited by Dr Kent Wan.
The Fong Sum Wood Library of Lingnan University held a book launch for Son of Hong Kong, Historian of China: The English Writings of Ming K. Chan on 19 August 2024. The late historian was an authority on the modern Hong Kong history and labour movements, and this book brings together his most important writings in English, giving readers a fresh perspective on the role and significance of Hong Kong in recent Chinese history.
There were four guest speakers: Mr Chau Yick, author of A History of Labour Movement in Hong Kong, Mr Alen Leung, a researcher of Hong Kong labour movement, Dr Kent Wan, a Research Assistant at the Center for History of Republican China of Nanjing University, and Prof Peter Fong, President of the Hong Kong Public Administration Association.
The speakers discussed Prof Chan's research from diverse points of view. Mr Leung said how proud he was of having been a student of Prof Chan, and recalled the extreme care the professor took in historical research, describing his outstanding achievements. Dr Wan, who knew Prof Chan for many years and edited Son of Hong Kong, Historian of China: The English Writings of Ming K. Chan, hopes that it will help more people understand and appreciate the historian’s intellectual legacy.
