Prof Tang Xiaopeng, Assistant Professor of the Science Unit at Lingnan University, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, recently published a groundbreaking research paper titled "Lifespan-based Battery Classification towards Second-life Utilisation", which won the Best Paper Award at the prestigious 2024 IEEE 25th China Conference on System Simulation Technology and its Application (CCSSTA). It was one of only four papers out of 278 submissions to receive recognition.
Results show that even when the initial capacity and resistance of retired batteries are very similar, their lifespans can vary significantly. Using conventional capacity-resistance methods for battery evaluation leads to faulty battery grouping results, and the AI model proposed by the research team can reduce lifespan loss by at least 20 percent over traditional approaches. These findings offer new, reliable and accurate solutions for enhancing and predicting the second life of retired batteries, which helps extend their usable life, contributing positively to energy savings and emissions reduction throughout their lifecycle and, ultimately, improving battery management.
The School of Data Science of Lingnan University organised the 2024 International Workshop on Risk and Governance of Generative Artificial Intelligence from 25 to 26 November 2024 at the Cordis, Hong Kong hotel, where AI experts and scholars from around the world met to explore through case studies in-depth, original solutions to the possible risks of GenAI.
The hybrid seminar with 12 of the world's top AI experts, scholars, and industry leaders attracted more than 150 participants from outstanding academic and higher education institutions such as The Alan Turing Institute, the United Kingdom’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Bologna, Tsinghua University, and Microsoft Research Asia.
The Lingnan University Postgraduate Association (LUPGSA) hosted the Lingnan Voices in Governance—LegCo Members at Lingnan Seminar on 24 November 2024 with two influential alumni of Lingnan University and Hong Kong Legislative Council members, Mr Chan Hok-fung and Mr Frankie Ngan Man-yu, as keynote speakers. They all expressed expert opinions and described personal experiences in public policy, focusing on housing and human resources in Hong Kong.
The seminar provided an exceptional opportunity for Lingnan students to gain a deeper understanding of Hong Kong’s social development, inspiring the younger generation to take a positive, responsible attitude towards public affairs.
