President S. Joe Qin shares insights into impactful approach to scientific research

On 13 January 2025, Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science at Lingnan University, gave a presentation on “Doing Research to the Best of and Bigger Than Yourself” to describe his professional and academic journey, as well as his forward-looking vision for researching into data-driven science and automation with an interdisciplinary edge in this digital age. He advised young scholars to stay focused and make long-term plans to contribute to society with their strengths and potential. Around 100 academics, senior management members, research and taught postgraduate students, and undergraduates from various higher education institutions attended. During the Q&A session, President Qin discussed with participants how to formulate a good research topic in science, the opportunities and challenges in interdisciplinary collaborations, and the use of AI in offering a more objective evaluation of research papers.
