President S. Joe Qin Showcases Hong Kong’s Research Excellence at IEEE CASE 2025 in the US
Lingnan University President S. Joe Qin delivers the keynote speech at IEEE CASE 2025, presenting the university’s latest breakthrough in industrial intelligence: Principal Predictor Analysis (PPA).
Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science at Lingnan University, was invited to deliver a keynote speech at the 2025 IEEE 21st International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (IEEE CASE 2025), where he explained Lingnan’s latest original research on industrial intelligence, Principal Predictor Analysis (PPA), and the directions smart manufacturing and industrial digital transformation are headed in. His presentation showcased Hong Kong’s research strengths, and drew close attention from both the international academic community and industry professionals.
President S. Joe Qin delivered his keynote, “Latent Low-Dimensional Predictor Analytics for Engineering Applications”, alongside three other leading international scholars, Prof Shi Jianjun, Carolyn J. Stewart Chair and Professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Member of the US National Academy of Engineering; Dr Larry Matthies, Senior Research Scientist at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL); and Prof Mariagrazia Dotoli from the Politecnico di Bari, Italy. They all offered insights into data science, industrial AI, and smart technology, sharing their expertise and perspectives on cutting-edge developments.

President Qin’s speech sparks a lively general discussion, followed by a frank exchange with Prof Zhou Mengchu, Chairman of IKAS Industrial Automation and a NAI Fellow.
Organised by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), CASE 2025 was held from 17 to 21 August in Los Angeles. One of the most influential annual events in automation science and engineering, the five-day conference, “Secured and Trustworthy Automation,” attracted experts, scholars, and industry leaders from around the world to promote smarter and better living, covering topics such as automation systems, AI technologies, big data analytics, and smart cities.
