The eighth Legislative Council General Election is set for 7 December. To encourage widespread participation and foster a brighter future, Lingnan University has initiated a series of activities since early November aimed at supporting faculty, staff, and students in fulfilling their civic responsibilities and voting.
Lingnan University has sent encouraging emails to the entire university community and posted physical and digital posters. And the Office of Student Affairs has provided support to student societies to empower youth engagement. This includes members of the ICAC Ambassador Programme and the Flag Guard team distributing pamphlets, the Chinese Students and Scholars Association setting up promotional voting booths, and an information booth manned by the Basic Law Society. The Seminar on the Implementation of the "Patriots Governing Hong Kong" Principle and the Reform of Hong Kong's Electoral System further increased students' understanding of the Legislative Council General Election.

Hosted by the Basic Law Society, Lingnan University, on 20 November, the seminar featured speeches by Mr Simon Hou BBS, Secretary-General, and Ms Jamie Hu, Legal Consultant of the Hong Kong Basic Law Foundation, who provided insights into the key points of electoral system reform, clarifying the participation methods and significant implications of the Legislative Council General Election for Lingnan students. The event included an interactive Q&A session, and shared information about voter registration and the Legislative Council General Election, turning knowledge into civic action.

Basic Law Society, Lingnan University: The first and only one in HK
The Basic Law Society, Lingnan University, is the first and currently the only Basic Law society in a Hong Kong university. It aims to integrate the Basic Law and national development into the lives of young people through a variety of activities, enhancing their sense of belonging to the nation. On 22 November, the society organised a visit to the military camp for 36 students.
Leo Wang (History, Year 4), President of the Society said “The seminar not only disseminates knowledge about the rule of law, but also fosters a sense of national identity and civic responsibility. A correct understanding of the Basic Law among young people is essential for Hong Kong’s long-term stability under the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ framework. Through such activities, students grow in understanding and recognition, thereby injecting solid youth power into Hong Kong’s prosperity and development.”
He added, “With the society’s active promotion, students from the University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the City University of Hong Kong are also responding positively and preparing to establish similar organisations. To harness this thriving youth power, we plan to form an alliance of patriotic education clubs across Hong Kong’s universities.”
The Legislative Council Election is crucial for every citizen in Hong Kong, and the involvement of every Lingnanian is vital.
Let’s all vote on 7 December!
