Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies (APIAS) hosts the Chinese Tea Promotion in Young People Project sharing session-cum-public seminar on Chinese Tea and Health Benefits

26 Nov 2024

Lingnan University Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies (APIAS) held a sharing session on the success of the Chinese Tea Promotion in Young People Project (the project) on 23 November, setting out its achievements over the past year. It recognised the active participation of students from Lingnan and secondary schools, and aimed to raise public awareness of how Chinese tea improves health. The 232 attendees included members of the public, elderly care service units, Lingnan students, and secondary school students.

In his welcoming speech, Prof Dickson Chan Chak-kwan, Director of APIAS, thanked the social welfare organisations, tea artists, and secondary school teachers who have supported the project and worked together to promote the Chinese tea culture. He hopes that the public’s health routines will improve by drinking Chinese tea.

Prof Chan then presented certificates and service awards to the Chinese Tea Promotion Leaders from Lingnan and representatives from the PAOC Ka Chi Secondary School and CCC Fong Yun Wah Secondary School to thank them for their hard work.

A recap video showing how the 2024 project was conducted, including workshops held at Lingnan University and secondary schools, and the positive response from community outreach services, especially the elderly care service units. Student Chan Lok-tong was asked to talk about publicising Chinese tea, and said that a few years ago meeting for Chinese tea was a niche hobby, but "now Chinese tea drinking is more popular in Hong Kong, and I feel really happy about that."

The Chinese Tea and Health Benefits Seminar was hosted by Ms Tang, President of the Hong Kong Ancient Tea Culture Society (HKATCS), and Mr Cheung, Vice-President, who discussed the benefits of drinking tea and the best ways to store and to taste Chinese tea, how much calcium is absorbed by drinking tea, how to judge the quality of tea leaves, and whether overnight tea is harmful to health. A tea display area was set up outside showing different varieties and packaging.

The APIAS Chinese Tea Promotion in Young People Project is sponsored by the Tin Ka Ping Foundation, and was launched in 2024 with activities such as Chinese tea foundation courses at Lingnan, and workshops encouraging the Chinese tea culture and healthy living habits in secondary schools and centres for the elderly in Tuen Mun and Yuen Long, benefiting over 2,000 service users.
