From values to identity: alumna Bernice Li discusses her personal branding insights at LU Roundtable Meetup

The historic charm of the Jao Tsung-I Academy provided a vibrant platform for Lingnan University's "LU Roundtable for Learning & Networking" knowledge exchange and professional networking occasion. This series of events, an idea of the OIAPA Alumni Relations Team, serves as an invaluable bridge connecting alumni and professionals from diverse sectors.

On August 26, the fifth session delved into the art of personal branding—an essential compass on today's ever-evolving professional journey.

The speaker, Bernice Li, an alumna of Lingnan University's class of 2022 with a degree in Contemporary English Studies, commanded particular attention as she is now a highly successful brand and creative director who represents a prestigious clientele across the Asia-Pacific region.

Li described nuances that set individuals apart: "Your personal branding really depends on your character, personality, and your ambitions," she emphasised, portraying it as a means to consciously shape others' perceptions, and recommending aligning personal values with professional identity to encourage authentic projection. She explained that personal branding goes beyond portraying an ideal self, embracing a genuine and multifaceted representation, and should "Identify your unique value proposition."

Li underscored the importance of highlighting strengths, skills, and passions, so that networking emerged as playing a pivotal role in forging connections. "Always be prepared with a 15-second self-introduction—highlight what's unique about you and how it links to your professional identity," she advised.

Li also stressed the influence of the digital landscape on personal branding, saying “Networking opens doors for you, and then your online presence maintains these relationships, and helps you further extend your influence." Putting value over vanity, she suggested sharing resonating content for genuine connections, and, drawing from her own experience, she advocated authenticity, and posting struggles and triumphs online to foster connections.

Li also provided valuable insights into handling self-doubt, a challenge many of us face, noting "Daily practice of self-awareness, such as journaling and meditation, is key." She also stressed the importance of a support system of honest peers who provide immediate and constructive feedback.

She urged individuals to recognise that self-doubt often stems from societal constructs, which may not always align with one's own experiences. Li's personal strategy of introspection and staying true to her values reinforces her belief that everyone has their own internal compass – a "why" aligned with core values that defines them and guides them through moments of uncertainty. Li thinks that decisions made in this way are likely to be correct.

The "LU Roundtable for Learning & Networking" series remains a beacon of knowledge and professional enrichment, fostering connections among students and alumni. Li's talk radiated empowerment and strategic insights, leaving attendees with a revitalised outlook on personal branding.

Now that Li’s insightful discourse is over, another exciting event beckons at LU: a month-long Lingnanian pop-up cafe, themed "Taste the Lingnan Legacy," will be held at the Jao Tsung-I Academy from August 24 to September 23, 2023.  This lovely venue, which resonates with university history, features a history gallery, a mini-exhibition, and a delicious Lingnanian menu. In this ambiance, alumni and visitors alike will discover a captivating blend of nostalgia and innovation, a testament to the enduring legacy of Lingnan.
