Lingnan University, Asia Pacific Higher Education Research Partnership (APHERP) and IAFOR co-host the Conference for Higher Education Research - Hong Kong 2018

The 3-day Conference for Higher Education Research - Hong Kong 2018 (CHER-Hong Kong 2018) co-hosted by Lingnan University, Asia Pacific Higher Education Research Partnership (APHERP) and IAFOR commenced on 19 October at Lingnan University. The theme of the Conference was “Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Value”.
In recent years, governments in East Asia have called for a university-industry-business collaboration to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in light of the growing importance of technology advancement and its potential impact on social and economic changes. The Conference set out to examine how governments, universities, industries and businesses, and community at large in Asia work together to not only promote innovation and entrepreneurship for economic reasons but also for social development and cultural enhancement. Higher education researchers, university senior administrators, government officials, policy analysts, professionals working across industries and education came together to explore new strategies and measures in support of innovation-centric entrepreneurship.
Six keynote and featured speakers from USA, UK, Australia and East Asia, together with around 60 paper presenters from 19 countries/regions across Europe, USA, Australia, Middle East and Asia, joined the CHER-Hong Kong 2018. Postgraduate students from Lingnan University and education professionals from the University of Southern California’s Global Executive EdD programme, invited guests and academics from other higher education institutions in Hong Kong also participated in the Conference. CHER-Hong Kong 2018 was the first conference being held at Lingnan University after the Secretariat of Asia Pacific Higher Education Research Partnership (an Inter-University Research Consortium for Higher Education originally based in East-West Center in the USA) officially moved to Lingnan University. To celebrate deeper collaborations of APHERP with Asian partners, a special unveiling ceremony was held in the presence of Prof Leonard K CHENG, President of Lingnan University, Prof Deane NEUBAUER from East-West Center, Prof Joshua MOK Ka-Ho, Vice-President of Lingnan University, Mr Patrick WONG, Chairman of Lingnan Education Organization, Dr William LEUNG, Chairman of Lingnan University Alumni Association (Hong Kong) and Dr Frank LAW, ex-Chairman of the Court of Lingnan University.
President Cheng was one of the keynote speakers shed light on “Innovation and Entrepreneurship at a Liberal Arts University? The Experience of Lingnan University.” He discussed how innovation and entrepreneurship provide a base for development at liberal arts universities by sharing the experience at Lingnan. Another leading keynote speaker Prof Anthony WELCH, Professor of Education, Faculty of Education and Social Work of University of Sydney shared his research on “Innovation, Entrepreneurship and its shift to the East”. Other featured speakers included Prof Catherine MONTGOMERY from University of Bath, Prof Yuto KITAMURA from The University of Tokyo, Prof Deane NEUBAUER from East-West Center, USA and Dr XU Di from University of Hawaii-Mānoa.
The Conference was successfully held with diverse views and experiences shared by different stakeholders from governments, universities, industries, businesses and the community at large on the role of innovation and entrepreneurship in shaping nations to excel in the complex global environment. The platform was fruitful in exploring new strategies and measures in support of innovation-centric environment, promoting collaborations between university, industry, business, government and the society which met the core objective of this Conference.
