New Railway Projects Youth Ambassadors engage with the community
A Lingnan student ambassador exchanges ideas with Tuen Mun residents on new railway developments.
The New Railway Projects Youth Ambassadors Programme is a collaborative community initiative between Lingnan University and MTR Corporation Limited. It serves as a valuable platform to train university students to become youth ambassadors, fostering personal development, and enhancing skills such as public speaking and leadership.
Through a wide range of interactive activities, including informative talks and visits to kindergartens, and primary and secondary schools as well as youth and elderly community centres, youth ambassadors have met with nearly 5,000 members of the community since 2022 to tell them about the Tuen Mun South Extension and the Tung Chung Line Extension, which can familiarise the community with new railway development and enhanced public transport services.
The project team offers opportunities for both undergraduates and postgraduates to practise their service skills. George Cheung, a Bachelor of Philosophy student, took part in several community talks and said the programme allowed him to communicate with diverse groups of people, and that he enjoyed speaking to the community.
The programme also invites non-local students to become youth ambassadors to increase their understanding of urban development and encourage them to practise their communication and teamwork skills. Sherry Zhang from the Master of Science in Smart Ageing and Gerontology Programme was involved in school talks at primary schools, and liked engaging with children, noting their passion and energy.
Lingnan teams will continue working closely with stakeholders to provide students with more valuable opportunities for social engagement to help them become future community leaders.
