Scholarship student Avivi Hau pursues her educational dream at Lingnan
There is a saying that university students must do four things: join a student society, live on campus, participate in exchange programmes, and do internships. Avivi Hau Wai-man, a first-class honours graduate of the Chinese Department at Lingnan University in 2024, has ticked all these boxes during her four years of study.
Not only has she received the AIA Scholarship and the HSBC Greater Bay Area (Hong Kong) Scholarship, but this year Avivi was one of only six students in Hong Kong to receive a Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship.
When asked what influences her, Avivi says she is inspired by the Qing scholar Zang Yong, who believed that there are two key principles for mastering the classics: “diligence and meticulous attention”. Embracing the idea of lifelong learning, Avivi has made the most of her time at university, and aside from joining the Lingnan University Toastmasters Club to expand her network of friends, she has also actively promoted Hong Kong literature, and encouraged young writers to read each others’ work.

This summer, Avivi joined a Lingnan University internship programme, working at an innovation and technology company in the Greater Bay Area, which allowed her to step out of the literary world and challenge herself in business.
During her four years at university, Avivi has led a fulfilling and varied life. Next she will pursue an MPhil degree in Chinese at Lingnan, focusing on the Chinese classics.
