Lingnan University hosted “Career Expo 2026 - Let’s discover the careers bettering you and the world!” on campus from 17 to 20 March. For the first time, there was an on-site emotional support and career counselling zone for local and non-local students as well as graduates. This initiative aimed to bridge the psychological support gap for young people as they move from campus to workplace, helping them cultivate a positive mindset to meet professional challenges. The Expo had attracted more than 135 pre-eminent local and multinational companies offering employment and internship opportunities, setting a new record for participation. It runs online until mid-April, and enable a deeper understanding of labour market dynamics. Ms Alice Yeung, Principal Assistant Secretary (Civil Service) Appointments, also attended the kick-off ceremony held today and visited the government booths, and exchanged views with senior management of the university and students on career development.
Between March and April, the Office of Student Affairs and participating organisations hold nearly 50 free career workshops and recruitment seminars. Topics include ‘Applications and Challenges of Artificial Intelligence in Financial Services’, ‘Digital Foundations: Tech Skills for Tomorrow - Empowering you in a Tech-Driven World’, ‘Hong Kong Drifters’ Job Hunting Guide: How Mainland Students Cross the Mainland-HK Workplace Culture Gap’, and ‘Internship Excellence: Safeguard Yourself from Employment Traps’. Students and alumni are encouraged to register for these sessions.
The sixth session of the A Personal Perspective on Doing Good Research Seminar Series for the 2025/26 academic year, organised by the School of Graduate Studies of Lingnan University, was held on 5 March 2026. The seminar included an inspiring talk “Can Old Books Be Brought Back to Life?” by Prof Jean-Michel Henri Olivier Morel, Chair Professor of the Division of Industrial Data Science, attended by about 50 faculty members and students, which sparked great interest and discussion.
In his talk, Prof Morel discussed advanced techniques for digitally extracting, recognising, and restoring printed characters from scanned documents into printable formats. He reported on experiments on scanned images, describing techniques rooted in the mathematical theory of planar shapes, computer vision, and computer graphics to recover fine textual details while preserving the visual integrity of historical documents. This aims to contribute to the history of printing by developing shape dictionaries for Chinese characters and reviving neglected books of great interest, making them accessible in the digital era.
Lingnan University celebrates Chinese New Year at the Spring Festival x Heritage Salon
Organised by the Office of Student Affairs and the Office of Global Education, the Spring Festival x Heritage Salon was held on 11 February 2026 at Kin Sun Square (a.k.a. Skylight), bringing together over 500 students and staff members to celebrate Chinese New Year.
There were a rich line-up of performances and interactive stands manned by students from the Chinese Mainland, Pakistan, Russia, Turkey, and the US. Highlights included specially curated stalls showcasing heritage crafts and folklore, and also student AI application projects. The Office of Communications and Public Affairs also set up a booth to promote Lingnan University’s official social media platforms, and distributed free campus publications to staff and students.
The fifth session of the A Personal Perspective on Doing Good Research Seminar Series for the 2025/26 academic year, organised by the School of Graduate Studies of Lingnan University, was held on 4 February 2026 at the Leung Fong Oi Wan Art Gallery.
The seminar featured a thought-provoking talk titled “My Research Journey: The Importance of Networks and Contexts”, delivered by Prof Richard M. Walker, Lee Shau Kee Foundation Chair Professor of Public Administration in the School of Graduate Studies and the Department of Government and International Affairs. Prof Walker is also the Head of the Department of Government and International Affairs, as well as Director of the Lingnan University Institute for Advanced Study, the Institute of Policy Studies, and the Governance and Bureaucracy Lab. About 60 faculty members and students attended the session, which sparked keen interest and a lively discussion.
A study conducted by Lingnan University’s School of Graduate Studies examined intergenerational housing support from the perspective of parents, and the results show that only about one in four (26 per cent) parents surveyed plan to provide financial assistance to their children to buy their home within the next five years, 37 per cent believe that subsidising their children who want to purchase property is not their responsibility, and nearly seven in ten (67 per cent) thought their children lacked the financial capacity to purchase a home independently and the government should provide more subsidised housing to help the younger generation buy their own homes.
The study, Housing opportunities and family reciprocity: intergenerational support for young people and the role of housing and welfare policy in Hong Kong, was published in the latest issue of the internationally recognised Journal of Social Policy.
A recent study conducted by the Department of Psychology at Lingnan University shows that individual personality traits play an important role in the psychological well-being derived from exercise. Contrary to common belief, individuals with higher levels of extraversion did not show a significant increase in subjective well-being as their participation in ultradistance endurance events increased. In fact, those more open to the experience were also more likely to translate such demanding trials into improved overall well-being. These findings offer new insights to people choosing exercise and activities that best suit their personalities.
Lingnan University and Sichuan University Sign MoU to deepen Sichuan-Hong Kong educational cooperation
Prof Zhao Changsheng, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Sichuan University, led a delegation to visit Lingnan University on 19 March. The delegation met with Lingnan University’s senior management, including Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science, as well as Prof Xin Yao, Vice-President (Research and Innovation) and Tong Tin Sun Chair Professor of Machine Learning.
During the visit, the two universities signed an Memorandum of Understanding to establish comprehensive cooperation across several key areas, including student exchanges, faculty visits, cultural engagement, scientific research collaboration, joint talent cultivation, and short-term training programs.
Lingnan University and the Universidad de la República (University of the Republic, UdelaR), the largest public higher education institution in Uruguay, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 10 February 2026 on Lingnan campus, formally establishing an academic partnership. This is an important step in advancing academic cooperation between Lingnan and universities in South America.
Lingnan University’s Wu Jieh Yee School of Interdisciplinary Studies (WJYSIS) and the Advanced Institute for Ocean Research at Southern University of Science and Technology (AIOR at SUSTech), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 20 January 2026. Prof Chen Xi, Chair Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies and Dean of the WJYSIS at Lingnan University, and Prof Lin Jian, Chair Professor and Director of AIOR at SUSTech, Director of Shenzhen Ocean University Preparatory Team, and a Member of Academia Europaea, signed the MoU on behalf of the two universities.
On 6 February 2026, a preparatory meeting was held between the Sun Yat-sen University Institute of Advanced Studies Hong Kong and Lingnan University to discuss the joint establishment of an “Antibody Immunity + AI” innovation platform. Led by Prof Xin Yao, Vice-President (Research and Innovation) and Tong Tin Sun Chair Professor of Machine Learning at Lingnan University, a delegation visited the Sun Yat-sen University Institute of Advanced Studies Hong Kong to hold detailed discussions on project preparation and implementation. Representatives from Lingnan University, SinoMab Bioscience Limited (SinoMab), Canton Biologics Co., Ltd, and the Sun Yat-sen University Institute of Advanced Studies Hong Kong reached a broad consensus and explored the next steps.
