Link Sound Sinfonia

Project Introduction

Link Sound Sinfonia, supported by AR Charitable Foundation, is a social impact project initiated and coordinated by the Wong Bing Lai Music and Performing Arts Unit at Lingnan University. It aims to offer individuals from different backgrounds and with various musical abilities the training in teaching music and the opportunity to interact with learners, which include people with physical, mental and/or intellectual disabilities (PWD) and special educational needs (SEN), through practical sessions in real-life community settings.

By gathering our developed network ranging from Lingnan students, staff and alumni to cross-disciplinary professionals and facilitators like musicians, schoolteachers, social workers, clinical psychologists, technologists, as well as local charitable organizations and special schools, we are positive in establishing a platform that cherishes diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) with a shared love for music.

Through investigating and understanding individuals’ teaching and learning experiences, we would also like to provide tailor-made solutions based on the diverse needs and explore a sustainable pedagogy in music education.

Project Overview

At Link Sound Sinfonia, our guiding motto is “We Connect People with Music.” We are dedicated to achieving the following objectives:

• To bring musicians for social impact: We aim to unite musicians to create a positive influence within communities.
• To embrace diversity: We celebrate and promote inclusive music in all our initiatives, ensuring that diverse voices are heard and valued.
• To nurture talents and professionals: We are committed to cultivating the skills of emerging musicians and professionals in the field.

Key Project Components

The project incorporates multiple complementary elements, encompassing music education, practical application, and training aspects, to ensure sustainable development and broad impact:

• Music Training Units: Comprehensive courses tailored specifically for individuals with Special Educational Needs (SEN), emphasizing individualized learning pathways to help participants acquire foundational music skills, thereby enhancing self-confidence and social abilities.
• Community Ensemble: A mixed ensemble group comprising Lingnan University students, individuals with SEN, and community members, which regularly organizes inclusive music performances. Through collective creation and performances, it strengthens teamwork and community connections.
• Inclusive Music Performances: Open to participants regardless of musical experience or background, providing a stage to showcase individual talents. Using music as a bridge, it connects diverse communities, fosters mutual trust and understanding, and realizes a truly inclusive community culture.
• “Train-the-Trainer” Workshops: Inviting professionals from various fields to share practical experiences, training Lingnan University students and volunteers interested in community music to become qualified community music instructors, thereby expanding the long-term impact of the project.
• Research on Music Pedagogy: Conducting research to develop sustainable music teaching methods designed according to the needs of different individuals.

Impact Highlights

From November 2021 to October 2025, the project has cumulatively served over 200 total participations by individuals with Special Educational Needs (SEN), and attracted more than 200 Lingnan University students to participate.

During this period, 770 music training sessions have been successfully conducted, and 15 public inclusive music performances have been presented, drawing over 2,000 audience members.

In addition, by the end of the project year, 15 interns will have successfully completed their internship experiences, gaining valuable insights into inclusive music education and community engagement.
