Real educational leadership means rethinking assumptions from the ground up, and Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science at Lingnan University, embodies that mindset. Recently, President Qin was named one of the Top 50 Visionary Education Leaders to Watch in 2026 by top global education magazine The Education View, a list recognising inspiring changemakers who advance education through innovative leadership, academic excellence, student-focused initiatives, and meaningful contributions to the future of learning.
In The Education View’s feature, President Qin describes Lingnan's forward-looking initiatives to equip students for an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven era. Characterising AI as an "intellectual revolution", and contends that “Universities must rethink what knowledge should be taught, what skills remain uniquely human, and how graduates can thrive in a world where machines increasingly outperform people in routine intellectual work”. He said that students should understand when AI should be trusted, when challenged, and when human judgement must prevail.
A research-focused liberal arts university comprehensive in arts and sciences in the digital era, Lingnan has transformed this philosophy into "liberal arts + technology" and “AI+” strategies that redraw conventional disciplinary boundaries under President Qin’s leadership. Generative AI is now woven into the curriculum, advanced AI platforms are made freely accessible, and a compulsory core course ensures every undergraduate develops both technical competence and ethical judgement.
The results speak clearly: Lingnan has retained its World No. 1 position in SDG 4: Quality Education in the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026, entered the Top 100 of THE Asia University Rankings 2026, and climbed over 120 places in the QS World University Rankings 2027.
President Qin sees the Hong Kong SAR's unique position within the Greater Bay Area as a significant opportunity for local universities to contribute to national strategies that integrate education, technology, and talent, all while maintaining an international outlook. Lingnan, as one of these institutions, continues to expand its global partnerships and attract world-class scholars. This recognition by The Education View affirms President Qin's outstanding contribution to the future of learning through his visionary and innovative leadership.
