Welcoming new students for 2026/27 academic year
Lingnan holds its 2026/27 academic year New Student Orientation and Official Welcome on campus.
On the day of the inauguration ceremony, Lingnan University launches the Kaleidoscope Programme, tailored for newcomers with library and campus tours, sports facilities briefings, and workshops on hostel life explaining campus resources and facilities.
In late August, Lingnan University held its 2026/27 academic year new student orientations at the Tuen Mun campus. This academic year brings multiple breakthroughs in curriculum structure and talent cultivation for Lingnan, including the launch of the inaugural Samuel C.C. Ting Elite Class and the addition of three taught postgraduate programmes designed for the digital era. As thousands of new students from all over the globe join the Lingnan family, they officially embark on a journey of interdisciplinary studies and research.
Inaugural Samuel C. C. Ting Elite Class offers comprehensive learning resources for top undergraduates
On 24 August, Lingnan held its 2026/27 academic year New Student Orientation and Official Welcome for undergraduate students at its Tuen Mun campus, greeting incoming undergraduate students from the Hong Kong SAR, the Chinese Mainland, and overseas. This year’s cohort includes students from a wide range of countries and regions, including Bhutan, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, underscoring the University’s diverse, inclusive and international campus.
In his remarks, Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science, said “I believe that every student harbours unique dreams and potential, and looks forward to finding their own stage at the University. Lingnan provides an interdisciplinary learning environment and diverse opportunities for development, supporting students in pursuing excellence in their studies, innovation, and personal growth.”
Launched this academic year, the Samuel C.C. Ting Elite Class will provide designated students with comprehensive learning resources. The University continues to refine its scholarships and talent-development programmes to help students chart a suitable formative course, and make the most of their strengths.”
That day, Lingnan also launched the Kaleidoscope Programme for newcomers with library and campus tours, sports facilities briefings, and workshops on hostel life explaining campus resources and facilities. Lingnan will also host the Campus Life Carnival on 3 September to encourage freshmen to integrate.

Lingnan University holds its first-ever “Welcome Gathering for Research Postgraduate Students”, hosted by Prof Xin Yao, Vice-President (Research and Innovation) and Tong Tin Sun Chair Professor of Machine Learning. Prof Sam Kwong Tak-wu, Associate Vice-President (Strategic Research), J.K. Lee Chair Professor of Computational Intelligence and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies joins to share his academic journey and extends a warm welcome to the new cohort.
Record 50 taught postgraduate programmes include new courses in AI, data analytics, and smart manufacturing
The “Empower Your Future: Lingnan Postgraduate Orientation 2026” was held on campus on 27 August, welcoming about 3,200 new taught postgraduate/doctoral degree and Master/Doctor of Philosophy programme students for the 2026/27 academic year. They come from over 20 countries and regions worldwide, including the Hong Kong SAR, the Chinese Mainland, Bangladesh, Canada, Ethiopia, France, Ghana, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Türkiye, the UK, the US, and Vietnam.
Prof Raymond Chan Hon-fu, Vice-President (Academics) cum Provost and Lam Man Tsan Chair Professor of Scientific Computing, welcomed the new postgraduates to Lingnan “Postgraduate students are a vital force in driving knowledge innovation and scientific research. Lingnan aims to become a leading research-intensive liberal arts university comprehensive in arts and sciences in the digital era. We are committed to creating more opportunities for postgraduates in research and interdisciplinary collaboration, and enabling students to work closely with professors co-authoring academic papers that address real-world challenges and uphold Lingnan’s motto of ‘Education for Service’.”
In the new academic year, a record number of six outstanding PhD students from the Chinese Mainland, Bangladesh, France, Russia, and the US have been recognised under the prestigious Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme. Lingnan also held a “Welcome Gathering for Research Postgraduate Students” for the first time, hosted by Prof Xin Yao, Vice-President (Research and Innovation) and Tong Tin Sun Chair Professor of Machine Learning, to help postgraduates gain a deeper understanding of the research environment, supporting resources, and development opportunities.
To meet the growing demand for professionals in artificial intelligence, data analytics, and smart manufacturing, Lingnan has introduced three new taught postgraduate programmes for the 2026/27 academic year, bringing the number of courses to a record high of 50. The new programmes include:
• Department of Sociology and Social Policy - Master of Social Sciences in Sociology and Data Analytics
• School of Data Science - Master of Science in Innovative Design and Artificial Intelligence
• Wu Jieh Yee School of Interdisciplinary Studies - Doctor of Smart Manufacturing.
The University held a campus carnival on Postgraduate Orientation Day. A “Safe & Smart @ Lingnan” zone was also set up, where representatives from the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) and the Hong Kong Police Force gave new students anti-corruption and anti-scam information and advice.
