Smart Campus Access: Fast, Secure Facial Recognition
As part of the University’s Smart Campus initiatives, ITSC is introducing a state-of-the-art AI facial recognition system as a convenient, touchless alternative to physical smartcard access. Following a successful pilot launch in the offices of the President and Vice-Presidents, we will roll out this system across campus facilities in phases.
How It Works?
Entering campus spaces is now touchless and effortless:
- Approach the Door or Entrance Gate: Look directly at the smart access device installed at the entrance.
- Instant Verification: The system verifies your profile in under a second and unlocks the door.
The new AI facial recognition system uses advanced biometric technology to grant effortless access. It is also engineered with privacy at its core: photos taken during registration will be converted and stored exclusively as encrypted mathematical templates rather than viewable photographs, ensuring full compliance with data protection policies. Once a registered user is detected, the system processes profiles instantly to ensure a smooth, uninterrupted flow of foot traffic. Powered by dual-lens HD infrared cameras and a financial-grade 3D anti-spoofing algorithm, the technology operates well in both daylight and complete darkness while using liveness detection to block spoofing attempts from photos, screens, or 3D masks. Because biometric profiles cannot be lost, stolen, or shared like physical smartcards, this system significantly enhances overall campus security.
The following are the core performance metrics of the system:
- Recognition Speed: ≤ 1 second
- False Rejection Rate (FRR): ≤ 1%
- False Acceptance Rate (FAR): ≤ 0.0001%
Recognition Accuracy: ≥ 99.5%
One-Time Registration
Prior on-site registration is required for accurate detection. Registration is entirely voluntary, as the system serves as an optional alternative to your traditional smartcard. However, we highly encourage all staff and students to opt in to enjoy seamless, card-free entry as more venues go live across campus.
